Internet Browsing Questions
What is the difference between
Internet Explorer
and Windows Explorer?

Internet Explorer is the program you use to surf the internet, also known as the World Wide Web. Hence the www in front of all website addresses.

Windows Explorer allows you to explore files, folders, drives, and directories on your computer.

What are COOKIES? Cookies are little tracking devices used to remember you as you surf the internet. They can be good or bad, depending upon where you picked them up, and what their purpose is. Common uses for cookies are: remembering your passwords, storing your shopper ID number, and reporting back to their home base about your surfing habits.
What is a PLUG-IN?

A plug-in is a small application that works with your browser (like Internet Explorer) to display various types of web media. For example, some web sites use Shockwave to allow you to play interactive games. But to play these games, you need to have a Shockwave plug-in.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is another popular plug-in which allows you to read .pdf files.

How do you know which plug-ins you need? When you get to a site that requires one, your plug-in will either run automatically or, if you don't have it, there will be instructions for downloading it.

Website Questions
Why should my domain name and hosting account be in MY name and not in the name of my website developer/company? They said they always register it in their name. Your domain name and website are your property, not the property of the website development company. Some companies like to keep control of your domain and it can be difficult for you to regain control of it later on or move it to a different registrar or hosting server. Always insist that your domain and hosting account be set up in a special account just for you, in YOUR name.
I had a website made over a year ago and it is still not showing up in Google or Yahoo. Why?

If your website has been online for a long time, there are several reasons why it may not be showing up in search results:

  • The site may not have been fully optimized and formally submitted to search engines. Ask your developer whether that service was included with your website setup. Generally, that is an additional fee which can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars, depending upon the type of website you have. Without formal submission, it is extremely unlikely that your website will show up during a keyword search.
  • If your site WAS submitted, it may be "in there" but coming up at a lower ranking on page 10 or more of the search results. Some keywords are extremely common (such as real estate or jewelry) and there are literally tens of millions of websites with those keywords in their listings. Currently, Yahoo lists over 1.5 BILLION listings for "jewelry" and over 2.5 BILLION listings for "land"!  In order to obtain a good result, it is generally advisable to pay search engines directly for sponsored listings using keyword phrases.
So, what can I expect as far as search engine results for my website? Each website is different! Everything depends upon the type of website you have, your keyword choice and your advertising budget. The "good old days" of free listings is over and search engines want your advertising dollars. Ask your webmaster how to best promote your website or contact Dynamic Web Systems and ask to speak with a Website Optimization expert.
